Heated tobacco, vaping and smoking

With so many alternatives to continued smoking on the market today, adult smokers are likely to have heard of heated tobacco, vaping and e-cigarettes. Questions that many smokers may have are, what is the difference between heated tobacco, vaping and smoking cigarettes, and is vaping safe?

Firstly, none of the nicotine-containing products are safe. The best decision any smoker can make is to quit tobacco and nicotine use altogether. For those adults who would otherwise continue to smoke we will try to explain the key difference between heated tobacco, vaping and smoking.

Heated tobacco vs smoking?

IQOS and lil SOLID tobacco heating devices emit 95% less harmful substances than cigarettes.1 Both heat tobacco sticks in a controlled temperature regime, eliminating burning. Because there is no combustion, no tar is released.2 In the absence of combustion, nicotine is produced without fire, smoke or ash. And HEETS and Fiit tobacco sticks contain high quality real tobacco with different flavor notes.

Vaping vs smoking?

To begin, smoking involves lighting a cigarette and letting it burn. This process of burning, called combustion, produces cigarette smoke.

Vapes, or e-cigarettes, do not burn tobacco. Rather, they use e liquids that are heated to specific temperatures using a battery powered heating component. The vapor from e-vapor products is generated when the e-liquid is heated. There should be no combustion as nothing is lit on fire, and as a result, no smoke is produced. Vaping products are not risk-free, and they provide nicotine, which is addictive. Vapes must not be used by minors, people who have quit smoking, and never smoked.

All nicotine-containing products should not be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding and should not be used by people who have or are at risk of heart disease, are diabetic, are epileptic or are experiencing seizures.

Despite all the continued questions, one thing remains clear: cigarette smoking causes serious diseases and is addictive. Without question, the best decision any smoker can make is to quit tobacco and nicotine use altogether.

Is vaping safe?

Adult smokers who would otherwise continue smoking or using other nicotine products and are considering switching to vaping often wonder what is the difference between vaping vs smoking.

In cigarettes, tobacco is burned. When burning takes place, the temperature in a cigarette can rise above 600°C in the tobacco and even exceed 800°C at the tip when one takes a puff. The high temperatures created by the process of burning (combusting) tobacco cause the production of the majority and high levels of harmful chemicals detected in cigarette smoke. While smoke is an aerosol, not all aerosols are smoke.

Vaping products work by heating e-liquids, many of which contain nicotine. By not burning tobacco, e-cigarettes in general don’t create tobacco smoke and their aerosols should contain fewer and lower levels of harmful chemicals compared to cigarette smoke. Of course, it is a matter of scientific assessment of each particular vaping product to see if this is actually the case. Vaping products are not risk-free, and they provide nicotine, which is addictive.

Is heated tobacco safe

It is combustion that causes the production of many h armful chemicals detected in cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke contains over 6000 different chemicals, and about a hundred of which are considered as harmful and potentially harmful constituents. The high levels of harmful chemicals in the smoke of a burning cigarette are the primary cause of smoking-related disease.

IQOS heats tobacco to a much lower temperature compared to cigarettes. Hence the differences between cigarettes and this particular tobacco heating system.

If you search, you will find a number of scientific papers, as well as more than 160 pieces of independent clinical research on your device. Most of them confirmed that IQOS aerosol contains significantly less harmful substances than cigarette smoke.

Our evidence also shows that switching completely to IQOS presents less risk to your health than continuing to smoke.

Cigarettes produce high amounts of carbon monoxide, IQOS doesn’t. IQOS heats tobacco, producing on average 98% less carbon monoxide (CO) and significantly lower levels of other harmful chemicals compared to cigarettes.3

1Average reductions in levels of a range of harmful chemicals (excluding nicotine) compared to cigarette smoke. Important information: The absence of tar does not mean that IQOS is risk-free. IQOS provides nicotine which is addictive.

2Tar is the residue from smoke after a cigarette is burned. Contrary to cigarettes, IQOS produces aerosol residue that is fundamentally different from tar and consists of significantly lower levels of harmful chemicals.

3Important information: This does not mean at 98% reduction in risk. IQOS is not risk free, and delivers nicotine which is addictive.

Source: We measured the levels of certain harmful chemicals prioritized for reporting by renowned public health organizations, and these are reduced on average by 95% compared to the smoke of a cigarette (nicotine excluded).
