The main cause of smoking-related diseases is the smoke produced by burning cigarettes. Tobacco on the tip of the cigarette burns under the influence of high temperatures, producing a large amount of smoke containing harmful substances.
Unlike cigarettes, IQOS heats tobacco to a much lower temperature. This is where the main differences between burning a cigarette and heating tobacco come from.
IQOS aerosol contains significantly less harmful substances than cigarette smoke. More specifically, IQOS aerosol contains on average 95% less harmful substances than cigarette smoke. 1
One of the most dangerous substances in cigarette smoke is carbon monoxide, which is produced in large quantities as a result of cigarette combustion. Unlike cigarettes, IQOS produces on average 98% less carbon monoxide.2
